Few people wanted to vacation in Florida during the summer. After New Year, when it was cold up north, was when people went south to escape. Some private yachts went north with their owners for the summer, but many charter yachts used the time to refit and allow the crew some time for vacations and rest.

Helen contacted Tegan with a proposal. A couple she knew specialized in charter yachting trips from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas. They were about to receive their yacht back from Reed’s boatyard after an overhaul and wanted new photos for their website. The standard fee for a commercial photographer was $1,500 per day. Helen asked if she would be interested.

“What do they want?” Tegan inquired.

“They need new photographs of the exterior and interior to show off the yacht’s impeccable condition since the recent refit.”

“I can do it. Can you set up the time and location?”

Helen agreed, and Tegan hung up the phone. Her Canon EOS 20 Megapixel Camera was adequate for the project, but to take the pictures required, she would need a new lens that would cost between $1,000 to $2,000, depending on which model she chose. If the client accepted the photos, she would pay for the lens from the fee. Otherwise, she would be stuck with an expensive lens. The local shops offered little in the way of discounts, but she had enough time to order the lens online and have it shipped in time to have a few days of practice. They scheduled the shoot for the middle of the week to avoid weekend crowds. Tegan met Helen at her house before dawn.

With Taylor in New York, Tegan hadn’t seen Helen in weeks. Tears flowed as they hugged. Helen’s smell and touch brought back such memories that it was difficult to compose herself when they let go.

Tegan suggested a dock space at the Hilton on the Intracoastal Waterway near the 17th Street Bridge. She chose the west side so that the sun would be behind her and insisted on an early start to capture the morning sun. The first set of pictures would be from the bridge over the Intracoastal. She found the right vantage point and set up her camera. A filter over the lens eliminated the glare, and the only reflections were the shimmering of the water. Tegan dialed the captain that she was in place and ready to shoot. She stayed on the phone using her headset to communicate. The first shots showed the empty ship; the next, with the crew lined up at the rail.

Scrolling through the shots, Tegan felt she had enough images from this angle, but waited a few minutes to see if the lighting changed, which it did, but for the worse. A few small clouds and the rising sun had ruined the mood. After hefting her gear down the bridge, Helen escorted Tegan to the yacht for introductions with Tim and Rhonda, the yacht owners.
